Here’s the thing about summer: It’s the season to bare all. More skin, more hair texture, more confidence—out there in broad daylight for everyone to take notice. Yet, it often has a way of sneaking up when we’re least prepared. The good news is, there’s still time to make tweaks. Follow our guide to help you look and feel fresh from head to toe—so you can take that confident strut from street to surf.
…of the toning kind. Get yourself a pair of P.volve Gliders, which will change your exercise game, and right in the comfort of home. “The gliders are great because they are small and don’t require much room to use,” says celebrity trainer and P.volve founder Stephen Pasterino. A towel on hard floors also works. “To tone thighs, it’s all about the stretch and squeeze,” Pasterino says. Start with one foot on the glider heel up, keeping your knees even and the glider foot right behind the standing one. Stretch your leg out while keeping your standing knee bent and your butt back. Once you feel the stretch in the inner thigh, pull your leg in and return to your starting position. Do eight reps. To hit your stomach and arms, assume a push up position with each foot on a glider, hip width apart. Pull knees in half way (stopping at your waist), engage the lower stomach, then push out squeezing your glutes. Make sure you push through your chest and arms the whole time, which really works the armpit areas. Do eight reps.
Being fit and feeling fine is equal parts diet and exercise. “If you’re trying to lean out for summer, cut down on sodium, artificial sugar, and eliminate pre-packaged foods,” Pasterino says. “Summer is great because so many fresh fruits, which are highly nutrient-dense and flavorful, are in season. Blueberries are at the top of my list as they are extremely high in antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber,” he says. They’re great to munch on anytime of the day, but try adding them to a salad for a summery taste. Cucumbers also have so many essential nutrients and anti-inflammatory properties, and even promote eye and skin health, Pasterino says. Make a cucumber salad for a side dish and toss it in olive oil and balsamic or add cucumbers to a cocktail instead of a sugary mixer. Ditch the heavy sauces and dressings and try going lighter in the kitchen by cooking with olive oil, lemons, limes, and tons of fresh herbs and spices for flavor.
Protect your hair
Sun, chlorine, and salt can strip your hair of its essential moisture in the summertime, leaving it looking dry, brittle, and lifeless. Reduce razor bumps
Shedding clothing in the summertime—whether at the beach or on the street—means you’ll want your skin looking smooth. Razor bumps generally occur on women with wiry, curly hair, Grous says. “Shaving sharpens the hair ends making it easier for them to penetrate into the skin,” she says.
